Springtime Nature, May 2016 #2

Is the Springtime not the most uplifting season of the year? All the swallows are now in attendance, a succession of cacti come into bloom and the fruit is swelling on the trees.

Probably three or more species of swallow are now seen congregated on the power lines: Violet-green and Barn swallows for sure, and perhaps some Tree and Cliff swallows. 

The river rushes

the swallows swoop and weave

a mallard rides the swift current

and, newly arrived,

a yellow-breasted chat

advertises his eligibility

with song phrases enough

for three or four birds

Overhead, monosyllabic honkers

honk

a yellow warbler

flits in the willows

and cottontails of all sizes

are to be seen

 

The clouds in the sky

the trees and grass

the river

the fish and furry animals

you and me

the evening chills

we stroll back to the house
